The Department of Strength of Materials, a current designation “Strength of Materials and Engineering Science” was established in 1949 and is coeval with Kyiv Automobile and Road Institute (KARI).

The Main Research Areas at the Department of Strength of Materials and Engineering Science:
- development of analytical and numerical methods of structural analysis;
- research of stress-strain state of structurally non-uniform constructional systems under the effect of power and temperature factors;
- applied and refined theory development;
- analysis of the construction in the form of single-layer or multilayer composite plates and shells;
- transport facilities calculations – bridge, road and airfield pavements;
- methods of metal structures calculations of road constructions, lifting and transport vehicles;
- stress-strain state analysis of heavy-duty cranes, trailers for transportation of maxi-shuttle construction machinery;
- stress-strain behaviour analysis of different spacecraft aerials shells.
